The Icelandic Youth Symphony Orchestra and the University Choir of Iceland

The Icelandic Youth Symphony Orchestra and the University Choir of Iceland share three works. Kristján Jóhannesson sings the baritone solos in Gabriel Fauré's Requiem, and Bjargey Birgisdóttir plays Jean Sibelius's Violin Concerto. The third is Cantus arcticus, written in 1972 by the Finnish composer Einojuhani Rautavaara, in which the orchestra plays against tape recordings of birdsong. Gunnsteinn Ólafsson conducts. He founded the orchestra in the autumn of 2004 and conducts the choir as well, and the orchestra usually numbers forty to fifty players between thirteen and twenty-five. Tickets are sold by the choir and the orchestra and at the door, and no price has been published.
