Sinfóníuhljómsveit unga fólksins

An orchestra of young players, also known as Ungfónía, founded in the autumn of 2004 by the conductor Gunnsteinn Ólafsson together with students from the music department of the Iceland University of the Arts and from Tónlistarskólinn í Reykjavík. It usually numbers forty to fifty players between thirteen and twenty-five, drawn from the university, the music schools of the capital region and conservatoires abroad, and its soloists are most often students finishing advanced study abroad or just back from it. It takes on three or four projects a year and plays around the country. In its first twenty years it gave the first performances of twenty-one works by Icelandic composers and the Icelandic premieres of ten from abroad. It was Reykjavík's Tónlistarhópur, the city's music ensemble of the year, in 2016, and it appears regularly with Háskólakórinn, the University of Iceland's choir.
