The Russian pianist Mikhail Pletnev gives a solo recital in Eldborg, in two parts. The first pairs four preludes and fugues from The Well-Tempered Clavier, Bach's collection with a prelude and fugue in every major and minor key, with Schumann's Kreisleriana: eight movements from 1838, named after Johannes Kreisler, the eccentric conductor of E.T.A. Hoffmann's stories. The second is given to Grieg, with sixteen of his Lyric Pieces, short piano works published in ten books between 1867 and 1901 and often named for what they picture, a butterfly or a brook. Pletnev was born in 1957 and won first prize at the International Tchaikovsky Competition in 1978. He also conducts and composes, and has arranged music from Tchaikovsky's ballets The Nutcracker and The Sleeping Beauty for the piano.
