Hafnarfjarðarkirkja

Hafnarfjarðarkirkja was drawn by Rögnvaldur Ólafsson in 1909 and consecrated on 20 December 1914. Until then the people of Hafnarfjörður went to church at Garðar on Álftanes, and much of that church came with them: the altarpiece by the Danish painter Rudolf J. Carlsen, which shows the Resurrection, the pulpit and the font. The master builder, Guðni Þorláksson, died of pneumonia as the work was finished, and his body was carried into the church on 23 December, Þorláksmessa. The church is concrete and a protected building, with a tall pyramid roof on its tower and stained glass by Fritz Oidtmann. It has two organs. Christian Scheffler's stands in the gallery, with twenty-five stops, consecrated in 2008; in the nave is a baroque organ by Kristian Wegscheider, with twelve, consecrated in 2009.
