The Free Church in Reykjavik

Nearly six hundred people founded a free congregation in Reykjavík in November 1899, evangelical and Lutheran, and said in the same announcement that they had no quarrel with the state church over doctrine. They bought a plot on the east bank of the Tjörn for six hundred krónur and raised a timber church on it in 1903, to the design of the master carpenter who built it. Rögnvaldur Ólafsson, usually reckoned the first Icelandic architect, lengthened it in 1905; a concrete choir was added in 1924, and the tower was built onto in 1940. It has been a protected building since 1990, a wooden room beside the water, and it keeps a concert calendar alongside its services.
