Dómkirkjan í Reykjavík

Dómkirkjan was consecrated in 1796, the first building raised in Reykjavík because the town was to become the capital of the country. A. Kirkerup drew it. The fabric weathered badly and it was rebuilt in 1848 under L. A. Winstrup, who raised the walls and added the chancel, the porch and the tower that stands on it now. The parliament house went up hard against the church a century after the consecration, and members still walk across to a service at the opening of a session. Karl Schuke of Berlin built the organ, consecrated on 1 December 1985, with 31 stops across three manuals. The church's first organ arrived in 1840 and was the first in any Icelandic church.
