Borgarleikhúsið

Leikfélag Reykjavíkur has staged plays without a break since 11 January 1897, which makes it the oldest theatre company in Iceland and one of the oldest societies of any kind here. Its members spent years raising the money for a house of their own, performing to fund it under the slogan Við byggjum leikhús, we are building a theatre. The city approved the plan early in 1975, the first sod was turned in 1976, and the company was handed the keys ten years after that. The house opened on 21 October 1989, ninety-two years after the company that built it.

Visiting

Access: Every hall in the building can be reached in a wheelchair. The seating in each rakes up in steps, and part of every hall is step-free. Wheelchairs, ear defenders and booster cushions for children can be borrowed from front-of-house staff, and a wheelchair user books through the box office or the theatre's website. Parking for wheelchair users is beside the box office, entered from Listabraut. Wheelchair-accessible toilets and a gender-neutral toilet are by Nýja svið. Every hall has a hearing loop, with receivers from front-of-house staff. A blind or partially sighted visitor can book a touch tour of the set and props before a performance through the box office, lasting about twenty minutes.
