Salurinn Concert Hall

Iceland had no room built for music until Salurinn opened in Kópavogur on 2 January 1999. Jakob Líndal and Kristján Ásgeirsson designed it for 292 people, 183 on the floor and 109 in the gallery, and Stefán Einarsson and Steindór Guðmundsson tuned it to a reverberation of between 1.2 and 1.8 seconds. Some 7,500 wooden pegs stand proud of the walls to take the edge off a tone, curtains adjust what is left, and the chairs are built so the room sounds the same empty as full. The spruce is from Skorradalur, the stone in the floor came out of the building's own foundation, and driftwood from Langanes lines part of the west window.

Visiting

Access
The hall has six wheelchair spaces, booked with Salurinn's staff. From the lobby inside the main entrance a lift goes down to the foyer, where the doors to the hall, the cloakroom, the toilets and the bar are. There is also an entrance on the lower floor that a car can drive right up to, and staff help with it. Rows 1 to 10 are on the lower level of the hall; rows 11 to 17 are on the balcony and are reached by stairs and steps. Parking for disabled visitors is in front of Tónlistarskóli Kópavogs, by Gerðarsafn and in the car park opposite Salurinn, which is entered from Hamraborg and Hábraut.
