Laugarneskirkja

Laugarneskirkja is a listed building, drawn by Guðjón Samúelsson while he was state architect and consecrated on 18 December 1949. It opens his last period as an architect: the ornament is gone, and the stepping of the tower, which stands twenty-five metres, still recalls basalt columns. Gréta Björnsson decorated the ceiling in 1956 with her husband Jón Björnsson, the couple who painted Selfosskirkja. The church was restored inside and out between 1987 and 1989 and taken back into use on 10 September 1989. Björgvin Tómasson built the organ of twenty-eight stops, consecrated during Advent in 2002. Three bells hang in the tower.
