Church · East, Eskifjörður

Eskifjarðarkirkja

Eskifjarðarkirkja was consecrated on 24 September 2000 and was designed with concerts in mind, and it serves as a cultural house as well as a church. Arkitektastofa Gylfa Guðjónssonar drew it. Tónlistarmiðstöð Austurlands, the music centre of East Iceland, founded in 2001, is based here, and the building is laid out to bring performers and listeners close, by sight and by sound. The hall seats a little over 300 and can be opened up for a hundred more. The older church in Eskifjörður was deconsecrated, and in 2006 it was allowed to become a house.
