Sakari conducts the ISO Wind Ensemble

Petri Sakari, a former chief conductor of the orchestra, leads its wind ensemble in Norðurljós. The concert opens with the fanfare Paul Dukas wrote to precede his ballet La Péri. Darius Milhaud's Dixtour follows, and then Stravinsky's Symphonies of Wind Instruments, written in memory of Claude Debussy and closing on a quiet chorale. Ruth Gipps was an English composer and oboist who left five symphonies; her Seascapes is scored for ten wind players. The concert ends with Magnus Lindberg's Gran Duo, in which twenty-four players set woodwind against brass. About an hour, without an interval.
