Iceland Symphony Orchestra 2026–27 · Instrumental recital
Bertrand Chamayou
Presented by Iceland Symphony Orchestra

Bertrand Chamayou plays alone, the day after he appears with the orchestra. The thread running through the programme is the song without words. Mendelssohn's short pieces carry that title themselves, and around them sits music grown out of song: Charles Ives's Song without (good) words, Schumann's Widmung in Liszt's transcription, Takemitsu's arrangement of the Beatles' Golden Slumbers, and Kurtág's recollection of a Romanian carol. George Crumb's Eine kleine Mitternachtmusik is built on Thelonious Monk's 'Round Midnight. The recital closes with Schubert's Wanderer Fantasy, each of whose movements opens with a variation on his song of the same name. About an hour, without an interval.
