Navaranaaq & Ólafs ríma Grænlendings

Presented by Reykjavík Opera Days

A face in bold blue, green and black shapes, like stained glass.

Greenland is Iceland's nearest neighbour, and for most of their history the two countries have had little to say to each other. This concert sets two accounts of the same catastrophe side by side. One is the Greenlandic legend of Navaranaaq, a woman who sowed distrust between the Norse settlers and the Inuit until it ended in war. The other is Einar Benediktsson's Ólafs ríma Grænlendings, which tells the end of the Greenland settlement from the Icelandic side. Kimmernaq Støvlbæk has written a new libretto in Greenlandic, and Nuka Alice performs Inuit drum dance, where the rhythm follows the drummer's own heartbeat. Choirs and a string orchestra.
