Bach's Clavier-Übung III on Reformation Day

A drawing of a claw hammer lying on its side with a long square-cut nail below it, in gold line on pale paper.

Steingrímur Þórhallsson plays Johann Sebastian Bach's Clavier-Übung III on the organ of Langholt Church on Reformation Day, 31 October. Published in 1739 and sometimes called the German Organ Mass, it sets hymns of the Lutheran Mass and the catechism as chorale preludes, framed by a prelude and a fugue in E flat. It is seldom heard. Steingrímur played it in this church in June, leaving out the smaller pieces, and now plays the works again, talking about them at the start and at points along the way. He became organist of Neskirkja in the autumn of 2002 and resigned the post in the spring of 2026. He dedicates the concert to the organists trained in church music who still serve the national church. Admission is free, and contributions go to former organists of the church.
