Við Djúpið

Chamber music old and new in Ísafjörður around the summer solstice, when the sun is highest, first held in 2003.

The front of Edinborgarhúsið in snow, a gabled entrance porch at the centre with a glazed arch above the doors, rows of small-paned white windows either side, the Icelandic flag on a mast above the ridge and a snow-covered mountainside behind.

Við Djúpið, which means by the Deep, Ísafjarðardjúp, is a chamber music festival in Ísafjörður around the summer solstice. New music and old share its programmes. It was first held in June 2003, in Ísafjörður and Bolungarvík, founded by Guðrún S. Birgisdóttir and Pétur Jónasson.

The main series is in Hamrar, the hall of Tónlistarfélag Ísafjarðar, the town's music society, and the lunchtime concerts are in Bryggjusalur at Edinborgarhúsið, though concerts turn up elsewhere in town as well. Alongside them there is a summer course for music students and a music-games course for children.

Greipur Gíslason, who first joined the festival in 2006, is its director.

The 2027 festival is from 16 to 20 June. Its site is viddjupid.is.
