The Reykholt Chamber Music Festival
Chamber music in the church at Reykholt, in Borgarfjörður, on the last weekend of July, every year since 1997.
Reykholtshátíð, the Reykholt Chamber Music Festival, is held in Reykholt in Borgarfjörður around the anniversary of the consecration of its church, which falls on the last Sunday of July. Reykholtskirkja was consecrated on 28 July 1996, and the first festival followed the next summer.
The pianist Steinunn Birna Ragnarsdóttir founded it and directed it until 2011. Since 2020 its artistic directors have been Þórunn Ósk Marínósdóttir and Sigurður Bjarki Gunnarsson. The festival's motto is classical music in historical surroundings, and the surroundings are Reykholt, the farm where Snorri Sturluson lived. Snorrastofa, the institute named for him, stands beside the church, and the festival's programme has included a lecture there.
Icelandic composers have written works for the festival, among them Þorkell Sigurbjörnsson, Hjálmar H. Ragnarsson, Hildigunnur Rúnarsdóttir, Þórður Magnússon and Hugi Guðmundsson.
