Music in Mývatn County
Two concerts at Easter by Lake Mývatn, as a rule on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. The festival began in 1998.
Since 1998 there has been music in Mývatnssveit, the country around Lake Mývatn, at Easter. The custom is two concerts with different programmes: a chamber concert on Maundy Thursday in Skjólbrekka, the community hall at Skútustaðir on the south side of the lake, and a church concert on Good Friday in Reykjahlíðarkirkja, at the edge of the lava on the north side.
The custom has not always held. In 2020 the festival was held in August and in 2021 in May, and in 2026 Mozart's opera Der Schauspieldirektor was given on two nights running in Skjólbrekka. The programme is mostly classical, though not always: in 2023 the weight fell on jazz and popular song.
The violinist Laufey Sigurðardóttir, a member of the Iceland Symphony Orchestra since 1980, has organised it from the beginning.
