Cathedral organist
Matthías Harðarson
Cathedral organist at Dómkirkjan in Reykjavík since July 2025. He was born in 1993 and grew up in Vestmannaeyjar. He began on the piano at about ten and moved to the organ on the advice of his teacher, the organist Guðmundur H. Guðjónsson, who handed him a key to Landakirkja so that he could practise there. He studied at Tónskóli þjóðkirkjunnar, took a BA in church music at the Iceland University of the Arts, and a master's degree in Aarhus with Ulrik Spang-Hanssen, Lars Rosenlund Nørremark and Kristian Krogsøe, the cathedral organist of that city. He read liturgical organ playing at home with Guðný Einarsdóttir, Eyþór Ingi Jónsson and Lára Bryndís Eggertsdóttir, and choral conducting with Magnús Ragnarsson. Alongside the music he qualified as a marine engineer, sailed on trawlers and ferries, and taught marine engineering at the upper secondary school in the islands until the spring of 2025. He gave a recital in Hallgrímskirkja's organ summer in July 2025. French organ music is what he plays by choice.
