Margrét Bóasdóttir

A singer and choirmaster, made a knight of the Order of the Falcon on New Year's Day 2024 for her contribution to music-making and to choral culture. She held the office of söngmálastjóri of the national church, the post a bishop appoints to carry out church policy on the singing at worship and on the training of the musicians who lead it. She moved north to Þingeyjarsýsla in 1987 and was asked to take on Kvennakórinn Lissý, a women's choir two years old at the time. It soon numbered sixty women, made a record and sang abroad. In May 1992 she was one of those who brought five women's choirs together in the north, a hundred and fifty singers in all. In April 2003 she was among the founders of Landssamband íslenskra kvennakóra, the Gígjan federation of women's choirs. Seventeen choirs were founding members, just under eight hundred singers between them. As a soprano she has sung Icelandic music with the organist Björn Steinar Sólbergsson at Bláa kirkjan, the summer series in Seyðisfjörður. She conducted the youth choir at Selfosskirkja for a time, and its former members sing under her here.
