Kvennakór Reykjavíkur

A women's choir that began work in January 1993 and was formally founded on 8 May the same year, after its spring concert in Langholtskirkja. The idea came from Margrét J. Pálmadóttir and the women of her choir school at Kramhúsið, and the choir's statutes give its purpose as strengthening the singing of women. It numbers between seventy and ninety, and it gives an Advent concert and a spring concert every year. At a choir competition in the Czech Republic in 2002 it took two silver medals, one in women's choral music and one in folk music. Demand in the early years was such that three further choirs grew up around it. They became independent in 2000, and Senjorítur, a choir of older women, is the one it runs today. Margrét conducted from the founding, Sigrún Þorgeirsdóttir took over in September 1997 and Ágota Joó in January 2010.
